Oprah Winfrey says she “starved” for months before pulling out a “cart full of animal fats” on a 1988 episode of her talk show to represent all the weight she had lost, all in an attempt to “disgrace.” ” to fight. she fumbled around her weight.

“Medicine gives people like me hope”

Opening the TV special, Winfrey said: “I never in my life would have imagined that we would be talking about medicines that would give hope to people like me who have struggled with being overweight or obese for years.”

“So I come to this conversation hoping that we can start to let go of the stigma, the shame and the judgment so that we stop shaming other people for being overweight or for how they choose to lose weight or not lose weight .”

“And more importantly, we need to stop shaming ourselves.

“I have to say that I accepted the shame that the world gave me because for 25 years making fun of my weight was a national sport.”

She said she would “never forget” seeing herself on the cover of TV Guides in her best and worst clothes in 1990, where she was described as “bumpy, lumpy and downright chubby.”

She continued, “I was mocked on every late night talk show for 25 years and on the front pages of the tabloids for 25 years.”

“Oprah: Fatter than ever”

She then read a series of hurtful headlines about her, including “Oprah: Fatter Than Ever” and “Oprah Warned About ‘Diet Or Die’.”

She said: “To combat all the shame, I starved myself for almost five months and then pulled out this wagon full of fat that the internet will never let me forget.”

She was referring to her talk show appearance in 1988, during which she rolled out a cart of animal fat on television equal to the weight she had lost.

She continued, “And after losing 67 pounds on a liquid diet, the next day, the very next day, I started gaining the weight back.”

“Feeling the shame of fighting a losing battle against obesity is an all-too-familiar story.”

In December 2023, during an interview with American celebrity magazine People, she admitted to taking weight loss medication, but did not reveal which one.

“You didn’t even think about food.”

“I’m completely done with being shamed by other people and especially myself.”

Winfrey said during the ABC special that since her weight loss treatment, she has been eating smaller portions and combining that with walking or running three to five miles a day, eating healthy and strength training.

“All these years I thought that all the people who never had to go on a diet were just using their willpower and for some reason they were stronger than me.”

“And now I realize you all didn’t even think about the food. It’s not that you had the willpower, that you weren’t obsessed with it – that’s the big thing I learned,” she said.

Winfrey became emotional as he described the drug giving people a “sense of hope” as they “no longer blame themselves.”

“Let’s stop shaming and blaming”

“When I tell you how many times I’ve blamed myself because you think, ‘I’m smart enough to figure this out,’ and then you hear it all the time, you’re fighting with your brain,” she said.

Winfrey ended the show by saying, “Let’s stop the shaming and blaming, there’s no place for that.”

In a rags-to-riches story, after being born to a single mother in Mississippi, Winfrey made a name for herself as host of The Oprah Winfrey Show from 1986 to 2011 – one of the most successful TV shows in US television history.

Her most notable interviews include her conversation with Michael Jackson in 1993, an interview seen by 90 million viewers, and her now infamous conversation with Tom Cruise in 2005, when he memorably jumped up and down on her couch to his Proclaiming love for her actress Katie Holmes.

Winfrey was most recently among the guests at Harry and Meghan’s wedding in Windsor in 2018 and interviewed them in one in 2021 insightful session that made headlines around the world after the couple accused an unnamed member of the royal family of raising concerns about how dark their son Archie’s skin color would be before his birth.
