Spring is almost here; The vernal equinox, the official start date for the Northern Hemisphere season, comes on Tuesday, March 19th.

The 2024 Spring Equinox occurs on Tuesday at exactly 11:06 p.m. EDT. But why does this day mark the beginning of spring and why only in the Northern Hemisphere?

What is an Equinox?

There are only two equinoxes in the year: vernal and autumnal. They occur when the sun is directly overhead at midday and almost equal proportions of day and night occur within 24 hours. The word equinox itself is derived from the Latin words aequus and nox, meaning night.

Usually it falls on March 19th, 20th or 21st. A spring equinox on March 21st is rare, they say Farmer’s Almanac. There has not been one in the mainland United States in the entire 21st century, and there will be none until 2101.

The Date variespartly because the Earth travels around the Sun in 365.24 days, while a calendar year is 365 days, according to the National Centers for Environmental Information.

What is the difference between the spring equinox and meteorological spring?

While the 2024 vernal equinox falls on March 19, meteorological spring began at the beginning of the month. According to NASA, there are two types of seasons: meteorological and astronomical.

Meteorological seasons are tied to the calendar and are based on the annual temperature cycle. Meteorological seasons are divided into groups of three months. Meteorological spring lasts from March 1st to May 31st every year.

Astronomical seasons are based on the tilt of the Earth’s axis and the Earth’s position during its orbit around the Sun.

When does spring begin in the southern hemisphere?

In the southern hemisphere, spring begins in September, while in the northern hemisphere, autumn begins.

The March equinox will bring later sunrises, earlier sunsets, cooler winds and dry, falling leaves in the Southern Hemisphere. The opposite is true in the Northern Hemisphere, where Tuesday’s equinox brings earlier sunrises, later sunsets, weaker winds and sprouting plants.

Rituals, traditions and myths

Easter isn’t until the end of March, but there is one Egg tradition associated with the equinox. According to a post, Chinese tradition includes the belief that an egg can stand upright exactly when winter ends and spring begins. However, it is technically possible to set up an egg every day of the year as long as you have a lot of patience.

Nowruz, the Iranian or Persian New Year, is associated with the spring equinox. According to the United Nations, it has been celebrated for more than 3,000 years in the Balkans, the Black Sea basin, the Caucasus, Central Asia, the Middle East and other regions.

When is the next solstice and equinox?

If you’re impatient for summer to begin, you’ll have to wait Summer solstice on Thursday, June 20th. The Autumnal Equinox, which signals the start of fall, occurs on Sunday, September 22nd. The winter solstice falls on Saturday, December 21st this year.
