2021 US Open runner-up Leylah Fernandez was ousted in first round and joins other Canadians | CBC sports

Canada's Leylah Fernandez is eliminated from the US Open on Tuesday after a 7-6(4), 5-7, 6-4 loss to No. 22 seed Ekaterina Alexandrova.

Fernandez, a finalist at the 2022 Grand Slam, was 4-3 up in the deciding third set after earning a break in game seven.

But Alexandrova grabbed the break right back to equalize the set 4-4, and after a serve she claimed her eighth break and won the match in just over three hours.

Fernandez, who entered the tournament ranked No. 67 in the world, has seen her record fall to 24-19 this season.

About 12 hours after Djokovic won comfortably on his return to the US Open, the No. 3-seeded Medvedev looked just as impressive as he did when he defeated Djokovic for the 2021 title, denying the 23-time Major champion from Serbia , which would have earned him his first calendar-year grand slam in men's tennis since 1969.

Alcaraz, the number 1 seeded player, should start his title defense against Dominik Koepfer on Tuesday night.

Mackenzie McDonald of the USA defeated No. 15 seeded Felix Auger-Aliassime of Montreal 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 in the opening round of the US Open.
